The CrossGroup

This program is being presented in partnership with the CrossGroup.  For decades, Jim Cross and Mark Cook have been assisting organizations to improve performance excellence. At the core of their customized solutions is a rigorous approach to understanding the needs of engineers and providing solutions that address these needs.  This session is uniquely designed for engineers and professionals in engineering firms.

The CrossGroup has specialized in serving A/E firms for more than sixteen years. They have developed and delivered a variety of training experiences and leadership programs for firms that are recognized as exemplary leaders in the profession:  Parkhill, Smith & Cooper, Freese and Nichols, RS&H; BGE, HRGreen, and others.  The CrossGroup developed and leads TSPE’s premier PE Leadership Institute program (now in its seventh year).

What you will learn

Since each participant has a different perspective, need, and approach to time management, the seminar takes you on a journey to discover your best approach:

1.     Time management is really self-management.  We don’t manage time as much as we manage ourselves and the way we utilize the time we have.  We encourage each participant to filter their ideas about time against the myths of time management that reside in our practices of using calendars and the clock.  Until we take charge of our lives as “owners,” we feel “lived” by others instead of living life to the fullest

2.     The seminar helps you take the big picture view to help the participants examine time from the perspective of what matters most to them.  We live much more fulfilled lives when we focus on our most important roles in life and spend some time on each of them each week.

3.     There is a section that helps you look at the ground level of time management as well.  Sometimes there is so much chaos with our to-do list that we need to take some time to record the details of what needs to get done.  There is so much in our mind that has not been recorded that the clutter creates anxiety and prevents us from planning well.

4.     The seminar contains a section on goal writing and action planning.  These activities help us to get organized and create realistic plans for execution.  We examine urgent vs important tasks and encourage a focus that avoids the “tyranny of the urgent.”  We all have urgent tasks, but not all of these are important.

5.     The seminar contains techniques that are best practices related to time wasters, weekly planning, delegation, procrastination, meeting planning, interruptions, clutter, and learning to say no.

What other engineers have said about the seminar

“Taking a day away from the office to go through the seminar is one of the best ways to find hidden time in your schedule and take an honest look at what's important and how to manage your time more effectively to accomplish the goals you have.”

“Great introspective material.  The course makes you think and personalize it to your situation.  You get out of it what you put in.  Good presentation.”

“It was good to have insight into things that distract us or keep us from work tasks and how to plan to deal with them.  Lots of self-evaluation that can be difficult, but necessary.”

“Great training that is much more than a typical sit in front of a PowerPoint presentation. Many real world and group discussions help make the topics understandable and relatable.”

“Good mixture of theory and application.  Nice to have co-participants of same background that can relate.”

“I found it very helpful, especially because it was interactive and made you think. It applies to work/life balance.”

“This was a good course with very helpful information.  It gave some good strategies for eliminating time wasters.  I would recommend to anyone I work with.”
